JOHN LAWSON
FRAGILE
March 7 - April 9
(Reception March 31st
2:00 - 4:00 PM)
The Firehouse
Gallery is pleased to announce the return of artist John Lawson with
his latest exhibition, Fragile. His new work will be
on exhibit in the two floor gallery at the Firehouse March 7th
through March April 9 with a reception held on Saturday, March 17th,
St Patrick’s Day, open to the public.
This exhibit
will be divided into two parts. In the main lobby on the ground
floor will be John’s ongoing series entitled Fragile.
This exhibit is works made from or related to the environment we
live in. All the pieces on display are made from or part of what
survived from his studio in New Orleans after it was destroyed in
Hurricane Katrina. Also on display will be 16ft of an installation
“Flood Line”, which is a memorial dedicated to the victims of
Katrina. Twenty-five feet of this piece was recently installed
permanently for the public in New Orleans and a further twelve-foot
piece was just accepted in the 21st International Juried
Exhibition of New Jersey, curated by Laura Hoptman, Senior Curator
for the New Contemporary Museum of Modern Art in New York.
Upstairs will
be an exhibit of 18 mixed media drawings and paintings as part of
his ongoing "New England" series. Lawson recently moved from New
Orleans and has settled permanently in Great Barrington, MA with his
wife and son. These drawings and paintings are inspired from the
coast and mountains found in the Lawson’s new home of New England.
Last year the
Firehouse organized an exhibition of Lawson’s recycled Mardi Gras
bead work that miraculously was spared from the flooding, which
consumed his home. As a result, the Firehouse set up a fund to help
reimburse some of Lawson’s art materials lost in the storm. This
exhibition is a thank you to the Firehouse and the people of
Newburyport for the support that was shown to John and his family.
This exhibition is funded in part
by the Gottlieb Foundation.
